Tantallon House Bed and Breakfast Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable Tourism
As a family-run business in a rural community, we aim to run our bed and breakfast accommodation in an environmentally friendly way, thereby promoting sustainable tourism. We are currently working towards some of the initiatives promoted by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. This includes everyday energy reduction and the encouragement of local wildlife.
Local Produce
We purchase local produce, where possible, to support the region’s farmers, as this in turn maintains the agricultural character of the area and improves our environment. Local products generally include Cumberland sausages, bacon, free-range farm eggs, honey and fruit preserves.
Fair Trade
Fair Trade coffee, tea and other produce are provided if you’re feeling peckish or thirsty at any point in your stay. We have chosen to supply Fair Trade products because we support their efforts to guarantee a better deal for Third World producers.

Wildlife
Deer, birds, rabbits, bats, hedgehogs and foxes are all frequently spotted in the vicinity of Tantallon House B&B. In our garden we encourage two areas of wild grassland, where 'charms' of goldfinches feed on the seeds.
Red Squirrels
Cumbria and Northumberland are among the last remaining habitats of Britain’s native red squirrel. At Tantallon House we support a local initiative to save them. We also follow guidelines from the Save Our Squirrels charity for our garden.
Local Birds
Recent guests have included a couple of bird enthusiasts who were delighted at the diversity of the local bird population. In our garden alone their sightings included dunnocks, goldfinches, swallows, house sparrows, blue tits, coal tits, spotted flycatchers, swifts and nuthatches (unusual to see them so far north).
Spotted in the local area were treecreepers, curlews, oyster catchers, dippers, kestrels, sparrow hawks, buzzards, wheatears, lapwings, grey and pied wagtails, herons and kingfishers. |
